Basic Techniques in Playing Tennis: How to Develop an Effective Shot


Tennis is a popular sport that requires skill, strategy, and physical fitness. One of the key elements in becoming a proficient tennis player is developing effective shots. Grip and Stance

Before we delve into the specific techniques, it’s important to establish the correct grip and stance. The grip refers to how you hold the tennis racket, and the stance refers to your positioning on the court.

For most shots, the continental grip is commonly used. This grip involves placing the base knuckle of your index finger on the third bevel of the racket handle. It provides versatility and allows for a wide range of shots.

When it comes to the stance, the basic position is known as the “ready position.” This involves standing with your feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, and weight evenly distributed on both feet. This stance allows for quick movement and balance.


The forehand shot is one of the most common and powerful shots in tennis. To execute an effective forehand, follow these steps:

  1. Start with the racket back, with your non-dominant hand holding the throat of the racket.
  2. As the ball approaches, pivot on your back foot and rotate your hips and shoulders towards the net.
  3. As you swing forward, make contact with the ball in front of your body, slightly in front of your dominant foot.
  4. Follow through with your swing, extending your arm towards the target.

The backhand shot is another important stroke in tennis. There are two main types of backhand shots: the one-handed backhand and the two-handed backhand. Here, we will focus on the two-handed backhand:

  1. Assume the ready position with your non-dominant hand on the throat of the racket and your dominant hand slightly above it.
  2. As the ball approaches, rotate your shoulders and hips, shifting your weight onto your front foot.
  3. With a slight bend in your knees, swing the racket across your body, making contact with the ball in front of your body.
  4. Follow through with your swing, extending both arms towards the target.

Practice the two-handed backhand to develop control and consistency in your shots.


The serve is the shot that starts each point in a tennis match. A powerful and accurate serve can give you an advantage right from the start. Here are the basic steps to develop an effective serve:

  1. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, facing the net.
  2. Hold the racket with a continental grip and extend your dominant hand towards the sky.
  3. Toss the ball slightly in front of you and slightly to the right (for right-handed players).
  4. As the ball reaches its highest point, explode upward with your legs, using your whole body to generate power.
  5. Swing the racket upwards, making contact with the ball at a high point.
  6. Follow through with your swing, extending your arm towards the target.
